We hear about CoolSculpting so much in the media that we may have the impression that we’ve heard all we need to know about this procedure. Most people recognize CoolSculpting as one of the leading fat-reduction treatments performed today. This technique happens to be an optimal option for getting rid of the stubborn fat that hangs around despite regular exercise and healthy eating habits. However good the results of CoolSculpting can be, the catch is that results are impressive in the right situations. Here, we discuss what you should know if you’re considering CoolSculpting for better curves.
HOW TREATMENT WORKS
CoolSculpting is a cryolipolysis treatment. This means that it destroys fat cells by “freezing” them. Cold temperature (cryo) delivered through the skin and into subcutaneous fat causes the death of fat cells (lipolysis). The degree of cooling that occurs during a treatment session is cold enough to target fat cells but not so cold that the skin could be damaged. Also, a gel sheet is placed over the skin before the applicator is applied, providing a layer of protection.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment. If patients see any change on the scale at all, it is minimal. The change that patients appreciate most is having a flatter tummy, smooth bra line, thinner thighs, or no more double-chin.
- CoolSculpting only targets one kind of fat. There is fat that lies just beneath the skin and there is fat that accumulates much deeper in the abdominal cavity. Deep fat, or visceral fat, cannot be removed with CoolSculpting (or liposuction, for that matter). Only healthy eating and regular exercise can eliminate this kind of fat.
- Pinching an inch can be a good thing. One of the ways a patient can begin to see if CoolSculpting is right for them is to “pinch an inch.” Being able to hold a small amount of fat between the fingers means there is enough fat to hold between the applicator cooling panels.
- Loose skin is a problem that needs a particular solution. For patients with loose skin, CoolSculpting by itself may not be enough. Freezing temperature only targets fat, not the dermis or epidermis. In some cases, then, reducing fat could make loose skin look worse. Laser treatments may be suitable for skin-tightening on areas treated with CoolSculpting.
