SKIN PEN and SKIN PEN with PRP
Skinpen is a medical grade, a state-of-the-art microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the face and body. During this procedure, the SkinPen® is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. Automated micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels which can be used with topical gels, creams, and serums to help improve the appearance of the skin. SkinPen® is the most advanced medical-grade automated micro-needling device on the market.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING MICRONEEDLING WITH THE SKINPEN?
The SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. It has 14 stainless steel medical-grade needles that get to work creating the hundreds of microscopic channels down through your epidermis. We can vary the penetration depth depending on the treatment site. For instance, the skin on the forehead requires a shallower penetration depth than the cheeks.
Here are the reasons we use the SkinPen at River Oaks:
- SkinPen has clinical testing to prove its effectiveness for reducing acne scars and improving skin texture and quality.
- SkinPen was the first FDA-cleared microneedling device and has consistently set the industry standard.
- The microneedle penetration depth can be adjusted. This is especially important due to variations in skin depth.
- SkinPen is uniquely effective on the delicate areas around the eyes and around the mouth.
- For each treatment at River Oaks Gynecology and Aesthetics we use a sterile, new, single-use SkinPen cartridge to eliminate the risk of infection.
- SkinPen has a Bio-Sheath feature to protect against any cross contamination.
WHAT AREAS ON THE BODY CAN BE TREATED WITH MICRONEEDLING?
We perform microneedling on the face, neck, chest, décolletage, hands, arms, legs, and abdomen. The most frequent targets are the facial skin, neck, and décolletage.
HOW IS MICRONEEDLING DONE?
At River Oaks, we use the SkinPen for our microneedling. It features 14 tiny needles that move up and down as the pen is moved across the treatment areas. These needles penetrate the epidermis to a selected depth of up to 2mm. This extends down into the top of the dermis layer of the skin, where collagen is produced.
As your River Oaks aesthetician moves the SkinPen across your skin, it creates hundreds of microscopic punctures/channels down into the dermis. Because the microscopic punctures are surrounded by untouched skin, they begin to heal almost immediately. But the body perceives these as wounds and it initiates the wound-healing process — producing new supplies of collagen, elastin, and new skin cells. These are meant to repair the wounds, but in microneedling the wounds are basically fully healed in just a few hours, so the collagen and elastin simply improves the skin texture and firmness. These are the tenets of younger-looking skin.
HOW IS PRP THERAPY USED FOR MICRONEEDLING TREATMENTS?
Plasma contains high concentration of platelets, stem cells and growth factors. Platelets help your tissue heal and grow new cells. PRP is used to help damaged, aging skin grow new collagen and elastin for beautiful, youthful results.
- We obtain Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, by drawing a small amount of blood from your arm into a sterile tube.
- This sample is centrifuged to separate your plasma, which we use for the treatment, from your red and white blood cells.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP THERAPY?
PRP has amazing healing characteristics. That’s why professional athletes have been using it to speed healing after injuries and surgery. Blood platelets are the critical component in wound healing, plus they have various growth factors that further improve its effects on building better, healthier skin.
At River Oaks we apply the PRP created when you first came in immediately following your microneedling. This allows far more effective penetration of the PRP through the epidermis down into the dermis layer of the skin. Now it’s easy for your body to benefit from the extensive growth factors and other cytokines present in PRP. This combination of microneedling and PRP increases tissue response five times more than that which occurs after microneedling alone.
HOW MANY MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Your skin improves over the next 4-6 weeks after your microneedling with PRP session at River Oaks. That’s about how long your collagen and elastin production ramps up in response to the microneedling. Our patients like to schedule microneedling with PRP in a series of 3-6 treatments. This provides great skin firming and improved texture. These treatments should be spaced about every 4-6 weeks, as this is about the duration of the increase in collagen and elastin. From there, a maintenance schedule keeps rejuvenating your skin.
WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE AFTER A MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?
Our patients at River Oaks love the simplicity and safety of these treatments. The microscopic wounds created by the SkinPen fully heal in just a couple hours, and we use a new sterile cartridge for every treatment. That virtually eliminates the chances of infection. This is a very safe procedure.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP?
After your session, your skin will look as if you have a mild sunburn. There will be some flushing and redness. This is dependent upon how many passes we made over your treatment areas and how deep the needle penetration. This typically passes by the next day. For this reason, many of our River Oaks microneedling with PRP patients opt to have their session after work. Still, you don’t have to restrict your activities in any way.
