Want a Slimmer Profile but Not Sure How to Get It? Let’s Talk Options!

Usually, fat is discussed in the context of body shape or weight. People want to lose weight or they wish to tone up some part of the body, like the stomach or the thighs. Today, we want to shift that focus and talk about the problem that many people struggle with but don’t discuss: submental fullness.

Submental What?

Submental fullness is the clinical term used to describe a double-chin. We know a double-chin as extra fatty tissue accumulating beneath the chin. This can present in varying degrees. For some people, the double-chin is seen when they look down. For others, enough fat cells have accumulated in the upper neck that there is an appearance of fullness at all times. Double-chin fat is nearly impossible to hide. It’s a problem for men and for women regardless of their general body shape and weight.

Solving the Double-Chin Problem: There are Options!

In our Houston office, patients have two options for how they treat a double-chin. One is Kybella and the other is CoolSculpting. Here, we point out how each works to help you determine which may be right for you.

Kybella is an injectable treatment that has been FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe submental fullness. The way it works is by introducing deoxycholic acid into the localized area beneath the chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally-occurring substance that the body uses to break down dietary fat. Studies have proven that this same acid can be used intradermally to break down fat cells. Swelling is the most common side effect of treatment and may require a few days of downtime or wearing a scarf. Improvement occurs over the course of several weeks. In order to achieve the best results from Kybella, up to 4 treatment sessions may be needed.

CoolSculpting is a treatment that is performed using a small device. No injections, no need for numbing anesthetic. No downtime. The way that CoolSculpting works to reduce fatty tissue is by literally freezing it. Treatment involves gently holding a small area of tissue between two panels. These panels progressively cool until the target temperature is reached. The panels stay in place for about an hour, affecting fat cells in a way that causes the body to metabolize them over several weeks. Like Kybella, a few treatment sessions may be needed to fully resolve double-chin fat.

Kybella or CoolSculpting: The Choice is Yours

Ultimately, clinical use has determined that Kybella and CoolSculpting achieve similar results. This is good news because it allows each patient to make their decision regarding treatment based on their personal preferences.
